Cisco Edge Incubation Hub launches in Nairobi

Cisco has announced the launch of a KES 69 million Incubation HUB in Kenya. This Incubation Centre will impart business knowledge and speed up access to market for Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME’s) in the ICT space. This centre will be hosted at The University of Nairobi and is a first for Cisco in East Africa and the second in Africa, having launched a Hub in South Africa last year.

This Hub known as the ‘Cisco EDGE Incubation Centre,’ is aimed at providing a platform for SMMEs to collaborate with Cisco’s experts across the globe to enable the small businesses to bring customers into the centre to experience Cisco solutions.

Technology is increasingly becoming the backbone of almost every aspect life in Kenya, ranging from the work place, the smart home, banking to everyday conversations and operations conducted over smartphones and other internet-enabled devices.

While this has made life vastly more convenient, the widespread use of these smart gadgets has spawned new forms of threats and vulnerabilities, with the latest statistics from the Communication Authority of Kenya showing that the number of cyber threats in Kenya more than doubled in the three months to December 2018.

The sector data showed that during the quarter, there was an increase in the number of cyber threats targeted at Kenya’s cyber space with over 10.2 million cyber events detected during the quarter, compared to 3.8 million in the previous quarter.

The Kenyan ICT sector has registered substantial growth, thanks to competition introduced in most market segments by the industry regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK).

Kenya now has one national operator, two regional telecommunications operators, 51 Internet service providers, two Internet exchange points, 20 public data network opera­tors, 8 Internet backbone gateway operators, 6 VSAT hub/commercial VSAT operators, 19 local loop operators and two mobile operators.

The operators and service providers represent a signifi­cant investment in the economy, a big employer of ICT staff and a major contribution to national development.
